Our Program

What is American Legion baseball?

American Legion Baseball (ALB) has a long and unique history in association and sponsorship with Major League Baseball.  For the 2023 season, players must be born on or after January 1, 2004, or simply put, 19U.  This effectively means that for 2023, we will be recruiting anticipated high school graduates of 2023 and their undergrad classmates.  Returning college freshmen of appropriate age must have been on our team’s roster in some previous year.  Our regular season games are 7 innings.  During the regular season, courtesy runners and free substitution/re-entry are permitted during the regular season, but not during the league playoffs.  The Maryland State championship tournament is a double elimination tournament consisting of 7 inning games played under American League rules.

Who is eligible to play for Post 60?

Our recruiting district encompasses players who attend one of the following high schools:

Atholton HS
Glenelg Country School
Mount Hebron HS
Our Lady of Good Counsel
River Hill HS
Wilde
 Lake HS

What is your roster size?

By ALB rules, we can keep no more than 18 players.  Final roster size must be determined before June 25th of the current season.

What type of player do you recruit?

We are interested in players who can function with a team-first ethic; play multiple positions; take summer baseball as their  (and their families’) top priority, and enjoy spending a sizable amount of their summer honing their game on a baseball field.

Where do you play?

We play in the Montgomery County American Legion league, which is one of the toughest, if not THE toughest American Legion leagues in the state of Maryland.  Almost all of our games are played in Montgomery County at high school fields or approved park fields.  Each year our players are pleasantly surprised by the excellent condition of our game fields, especially when compared to most of the fields they have played on in their high school season and prior summer travel seasons.  In addition we are, on occasion, able to play a few games on an area college field, especially when we have a player on a school's radar.  In addition, we have played in the July 4th Frederick American Legion Tournament the last several years.  We also play in the Appalachian Classic American Legion tournament, held in the Frostburg/Cumberland area over the Father's Day weekend (a tournament that we won in 2016).

Is playing time guaranteed?

This is a merit play organization.  That said, we do not ever intend to retain a player who is not able to regularly compete for playing time.

How long does the season run?

Our season runs from approximately Memorial Day through the Maryland State Tournament in late July/early August.  The state champion advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals around August 1st.  The eight (8) Regional Champions advance to the American Legion World Series about a week later in Shelby, NC.

Have you been successful?

We measure our success by the number of returning ballplayers, the number of former ballplayers who are now coaches, and the continuing energy and desire of our current coaches to keep on keeping on.  By those measures we are tremendously successful.

Others may wish to know about winning.  We do that also, having not missed out on our league playoffs ever….  We finished as the Maryland state championship runner up in 2010, 3rd place in the state in 2014, and 5th place in 2015.  We won the Montgomery County American Legion league championship in 2006, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019.  In 2016 we also won the Appalachian Classic American Legion tournament held in Frostburg/Cumberland.

What does it cost to play for Post 60?

There is a $500 non-refundable registration fee that is a tax deductible charitable contribution to the Laurel American Legion Post 60 Baseball Fund.
